What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment that boosts oxygen levels throughout the body. In a hyperbaric chamber, patients breathe pressurized oxygen. There are various types of hyperbaric chambers, which can provide different levels of pressure and oxygen. Soft-sided chambers can reach 1.3 Atmospheres Absolute (ATA), equivalent to about 11 feet underwater. They can operate with ambient air containing 19-21% oxygen, or use oxygen concentrators to increase the level. High-pressure chambers can reach much higher pressures, but typically treat up to 3 ATA and can use ambient air up to 100% oxygen levels.
The therapy works based on two main laws of physics: Henry’s Law and Boyle’s Law. Henry’s Law states that at a constant temperature, the amount of a given gas dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas in equilibrium with the liquid. In simple terms, pressure is needed for a gas (oxygen) to effectively dissolve into a liquid (blood plasma). In a hyperbaric environment, more oxygen can reach deep into body tissues.
Boyle’s Law states that at a constant temperature, the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure, and the density of a gas is directly proportional to the pressure. As pressure increases, oxygen molecules become smaller, creating a denser oxygen environment. Oxygen molecules in the alveolus (lung membrane) become more concentrated, allowing more oxygen to be transferred to the blood by diffusion, saturating the blood plasma.
Oxygen is the foundation of life; every cell in our body needs it to function properly. Oxygen is carried throughout the body via the circulatory system, specifically in red blood cells. A prolonged lack of oxygen leads to death. Many people don’t realize that oxygen can be depleted or blocked in small, localized areas of the body. If tissue is damaged by injury, infection, or stress, the inflammatory process will respond by surrounding the area with fluid and calling up the immune system to heal the wound. While inflammation is necessary for healing, it can also harm surrounding tissues. The swelling from fluid buildup puts pressure on blood vessels in the injured area, potentially narrowing or blocking blood flow. Without adequate blood flow, there won’t be enough oxygen to help cells rebuild and recover damaged tissue.
Inflammation is a major trigger of symptoms for most diseases, and without enough oxygen, it’s hard to control. Oxygen is a key natural anti-inflammatory our body uses to heal injuries. It can upregulate anti-inflammatory gene markers and downregulate inflammatory ones. Dr. Dan Rossignol found that 1 hour of oxygen delivery via a hyperbaric chamber has the same anti-inflammatory power as 12,000mg of Motrin. The higher pressure of a hyperbaric chamber dissolves oxygen into the plasma, allowing the circulatory system to deliver several times more oxygen to stressed or damaged tissue, from the brain to the toes. Thanks to oxygen’s anti-inflammatory properties, hyperbaric therapy has been successfully used for nearly 200 conditions, from sports recovery to severe traumatic brain injury.
